COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN)—President
Obama continued to show his Olympic spirit with an unannounced stop at
the U.S. Olympic Training Facility here on Thursday where he said he
“couldn’t be prouder” of all U.S. Olympic and Paralympics athletes.
He also took time out to congratulate the U.S. women’s soccer and water polo teams for their gold medals.“We have to give a special shout out to the women’s soccer team today avenging the loss in the World Cup,” Obama said.
The USA beat Japan 2-1 in the Olympic final at London’s Wembley Stadium. As the president toured the facility, a television in the background showed the medal ceremony.
During his tour, he met with future U.S. Olympic and Paralympics hopefuls with stops in two different gymnasiums filled with young athletes training for sports such as wrestling and pentathlon. In the wrestling gym, he had to remove his shoes in order to walk on the mats. As he put his shoes back on, he noted “No holes in my socks. My grandmother would be proud,” he joked.
Before his visit to the training facility, the president spoke to several thousand people attending a campaign rally on the campus of Colorado College. He started his remarks with somewhat of a spoiler alert for the U.S. women’s soccer game.
“For those of you who are curious, the women are doing pretty good right now in soccer. I know some of you may be, the game is not over, and some of you may have DVR'd it, so I'm not going to say anything more. But we're making progress,” Obama said.
While President Obama did not attend the Olympic opening ceremony, he has been watching many sports and has made several comments about the games in speeches over the last two weeks. The White House announced today that Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations will lead a delegation to London for the closing ceremony. The delegation also includes the president’s Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes, as well the president’s former personal assistant Reggie Love.
